Fire ratings explained: EI30, EI60, EI90, EI120
Fire resistance is classified under EN 13501-2. E stands for integrity (no flames or hot gases pass through), I for thermal insulation (the unexposed side stays below a temperature limit) and the number is the time in minutes. EI60 therefore means integrity and insulation for 60 minutes. REI adds R for load-bearing capacity, used for example for fire-rated glazed roofs.
Doors can also carry a smoke control class such as Sa/S200, which limits smoke leakage at ambient and elevated temperature.
Fire rated glazed screens and partitions
The Procural PE78EI family covers EI30, EI60, EI90 and EI120 partitions, with the Design Line EI120 using an 89 mm frame for glazing up to 73 mm. PE78EI seamless glass partitions provide EI30 and EI60 with 4 mm joints for a nearly frameless look. Aluprof MB-118EI reaches EI120, and MB-60E EI is an economical choice for internal EI30 partitions.
Fire rated doors and automatic sliding doors
Single and double-leaf glazed fire doors are available in the PE78EI and MB-78EI systems up to EI90, with smoke control class Sa/S200 on PE78EI. Aluprof MB-78EI DPA automatic fire rated sliding doors (EI15 and EI30) suit entrances and circulation areas where doors must stay open in daily use and close in a fire.
Fire rated windows, facades and smoke vents
PROCURAL PE78EI EI30 is available as a fixed window and as a tilt-turn window (PE78EI EI30 TT), so fire rated windows can also be opened. For external walls, PF152EI and MB-SR50N EI curtain walls reach EI30 and EI60, and glazed roofs reach REI 30 / RE 45. Aluprof smoke exhaust windows and dampers provide natural smoke ventilation for stairwells and atriums.

What does EI30 mean?
EI30 means the construction keeps its integrity (E) and thermal insulation (I) for 30 minutes of fire exposure, tested and classified to EN 13501-2.
What is an EI60 fire rating?
EI60 means integrity and insulation for 60 minutes. It is typically required between larger fire compartments; the exact requirement follows the national building rules and the fire strategy of the building.
Are aluminium windows fire rated?
Standard aluminium windows are not, but dedicated fire rated systems are. PROCURAL PE78EI EI30 windows are fire rated and are also available as an opening tilt-turn version.
How much does fire rated glazing cost per m²?

What is a smoke vent window and when is one required?
A smoke vent window opens automatically in a fire to let smoke and heat escape, typically at the top of stairwells and atriums. Whether it is required depends on the building type and national regulations; Aluprof smoke exhaust windows and dampers cover these applications.
